Landels News
Dear Landels Families,
Thank you to all the families that hosted and participated in our Multicultural Festival! It was so heartwarming to see students take pride in their own culture and share pieces of their culture with others. At Landels, we value and celebrate diversity - it is our greatest strength and I am honored to be a part of this community.
We continue to celebrate Hispanic/Latino Heritage Month and recognize the positive impacts and contributions of Latino and Hispanic individuals! Posters of famous Latino or Hispanic individuals have been posted throughout the school with information on why these individuals are/were influential. During snack or lunch, students are able to participate in a scavenger hunt in order to learn more about each person. Teachers will also engage students in appropriate grade-level conversations around Hispanic/Latino Heritage Month.
Parent-Teacher Conferences
Conference week is quickly approaching! Parent-Teacher (Student) Conferences present a valuable opportunity to discuss your child’s progress, strengths and needs, and work with your teacher to help your child have a successful academic experience. Conference week is scheduled for October 13th-17th. Every day that week is a minimum day for students (dismissal at 12:10pm). On Wednesday, October 1st @ 3pm, you will receive an email from your child’s teacher about signing up for conferences. If you need help signing up, please reach out to the teacher directly or you can contact the front office. We are looking for 100% participation!
Emergency Preparedness
You may have noticed fire trucks and police cars near the Landels parking lot yesterday. There was an incident on the Stevens Creek Trail, but it did not involve our school. Still, seeing emergency responders near campus can bring about feelings of stress and anxiety. As soon as I noticed the police presence, I immediately checked with MVPD to confirm there was no danger to students or staff. Because the emergency vehicles were visible from campus, I made an all-call to reassure everyone that we were safe. I will always do my best to communicate situations that may impact the school in a timely manner.
Thank you!
Pieter Dolmans
Short-term Independent Study
Short-term Independent Study is a contract that allows students to work independently when there are circumstances that make attending school difficult. Short-term Independent study can range from a minimum of 3 days and a maximum of 14 days per school year. Contracts are approved on a case-by-case basis, require a 2-week notice, and require students to be in good academic and attendance standing.
We understand that certain absences are sometimes unavoidable. It is important to do your best to have your child in school as much as possible. Whenever you can, try to avoid taking trips during the school year -- or make efforts to take trips during District holidays, calendar linked here. Our office staff can assist you with contract details: Ms. Ann Moorti at [email protected].

Parenting in the Digital Era: Building Healthy Tech Habit
Date and Time: September 30, 5:30-7:00 p.m. Registration: http://mvw.sd/pu093025r
Did you know that experts estimate that the average American teen spends 7-8 hours each day on their screens? It’s no wonder that this is a critical parenting topic. Fear not: our friends at My Digital TAT2 are returning to Parent University! At this Speaker Series event, MDT2 will update us on the latest tech trends and discuss the key topics of media literacy, misinformation/ disinformation, and social media influencers. They will also address the burning question: “When is it ok to give my kid a cell phone?” You will be equipped with fresh knowledge and useful strategies to help your family maintain a healthy relationship with tech...and with one another.
To submit questions prior to the event, go to mvw.sd/questions. We will do our best to address your questions during the session.
Mental Health Resources for Students
As the school year starts, it's important for students to know that help is available for mental health challenges that may arise. Check out these posters for information. Other resources are available at our Virtual Wellness Center under the Mental Health tab. You can always reach out to your school counselor, too. We are here to help.
Is your Student Too Sick for School?
As we enter the cold and flu season, it’s important to know when your student should stay home to rest and recover, as well as to prevent the spread of illness. Please take a moment to read the attached MVWSD’s Back to School Health Guidance flyer. It includes information on when your student should stay home, illness prevention tips and COVID guidelines. Knowing when to keep your student home helps keep our school community healthy and safe. Thank you for your cooperation!
Showing Up Matters….for learning, for friendships, for success
Help our students be their very best by making sure they show up every day and on time! Students that miss 10% of days (or two days a month) of school are considered chronically absent. When we reduce chronic absence we improve graduation rates, increase academic achievement and give young people the best chance at success in their adult life. Showing up on time matters, too! Even showing up 10 minutes late every day causes students to lose a full hour of learning each week. By working together, families and schools can ensure every student has the opportunity to grow, learn and succeed!
MVWSD seeks parents & staff members for Health and Wellness Committee
Committee and task force members lend perspective and expertise to important district work that benefits our students. Please consider serving on the Health and Wellness Committee. Applications are due by September 30 and can be found here: http://mvw.sd/health.
Health and Wellness Committee Task: To align District efforts to support student wellness through health education, physical education and activity, health services, nutrition services, psychological and counseling services, and a safe and healthy school environment.
Interested applicants would have some experience, knowledge, or interest in the content as described above. We are seeking at least 1 parent and 1 certificated representative per school site and 1 community-based organization representative. The maximum capacity of the group is 15 participants.
Time commitment is four meetings this school year, one hour per meeting, and all meetings are virtual. Those who are interested in participating and would like to learn more, please join us for our first meeting to learn about our work firsthand.
